The "Mahakumbh," also known as the "Kumbh Mela," is one of the largest and most famous religious gatherings in Hinduism. It is a pilgrimage event that takes place in India at four different locations: Allahabad (Prayagraj), Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. These locations are believed to be where drops of nectar fell from a "kumbh" (pot) during a divine battle in Hindu mythology.
The Mahakumbh is famous for Hindus because it offers the opportunity for spiritual cleansing and the chance to attain salvation by taking a ritual bath in the holy rivers at these designated sites. The festival typically attracts millions of devotees and sadhus (ascetics) who come to participate in various religious ceremonies, rituals, and discourses.
As for the location in 2025, the Kumbh Mela occurs in a 12-year cycle, rotating between the four cities mentioned earlier. In 2025, the Kumbh Mela is scheduled to take place in Prayagraj (formerly known as Allahabad). This event is expected to draw a massive gathering of Hindu pilgrims from across India and around the world.
